SHELTER-IN-PLACE PROCEDURES

Evacuation may not be appropriate for all emergencies. Shelter in place may be appropriate for active violence, severe weather, and hazardous material release.

Active Violence:

In the case of active violence, all faculty, staff, and students must be familiar with the following resources provided by the University to establish their plan of action:

Severe Weather:

When a tornado warning is announced, all building occupants should immediately proceed to their designated tornado refuge area as outlined below:

  • Mendoza → Lower Level Collaboration Corridor (lounge area near the Mendoza L068 classroom)
  • Stayer Center → Lower Level main hallway (hallway between MBA lounge and Stayer B003 Classroom)

Avoid using elevators and stay away from glass windows and doors.

Hazardous Material:

Shelter in place may also be appropriate for a hazardous material release. Listen carefully for instructions from ND Alert, and if shelter in place is required, proceed to the designated area as outlined below:

  • Mendoza → Lower Level Collaboration Corridor (lounge area near the Mendoza L068 classroom)
  • Stayer Center → Lower Level main hallway (hallway between MBA lounge and Stayer B003 Classroom)

EMERGENCY EQUIPMENT

Fire Extinguishers:

In most cases, employees are at less risk if they evacuate rather than use fire extinguishers. Fight the fire with an extinguisher only if:

  • The Fire Department has been notified, but the fire needs immediate containment
  • The fire is small and is not spreading to other areas
  • An escape route is unavailable
  • The fire extinguisher is in working condition, and personnel are trained to use it

Heart Defibrillator (Automated external defibrillator or A.E.D.):

There is one A.E.D. in each building; please see below for the exact locations.

  • Mendoza College of Business → First-floor atrium, near the west entrance
  • Stayer Center → First-floor atrium, near the west elevator
